On Saturday 17th June we will be looking at the moths who have visited the light traps at Mavisbank the night before. Come along and meet the moths and join in with making moth themed bunting for Buglife, the Invertebrate Conservation Trust which supports the small things like moths, that keep the world running.

Many people aren’t aware that moths are vital pollinators. Many of our moth species are day flying, but then there are those that work under the cover of darkness, which is perhaps why we don’t appreciate them in the same way we do our bees, and butterflies.

Some of the moths we will see may be tiny micro-moths, but most will be much bigger and at Mavisbank during June we often catch magnificent hawkmoths like the Poplar Hawkmoth which can be 8cm across! As well as pink, green, yellow, red and orange moths like Elephant Hawkmoths, Large Emerald, Tiger and Brimstone Moths. Lots of elegant brown ones as well though…be inspired by these lovely night inhabitants and help make some cheerful bunting to welcome the summer whilst sharing a cup of coffee or tea. Bunting making is between 10am-12pm.The moth traps will be opened earlier, and you are welcome to come along to see us carefully catching the moths to identify…Anyone under the age of 16 must bring an adult with them.
