Description
Betony (Betonica officinalis)
Betony is a spectacular pink flowered perennial plant which in Scotland grows in the wild in only a few places but which was traditionally planted in herb gardens across the country. Its widespread use is reflected in one of several Gaelic names: Lus Beathaig – the ‘plant that nourishes’. It grows 20-70cm high.
Sowing: the seeds need cold to grow. For germination the next spring, sow outside in autumn onto a fine raked seed bed, firming down well. To grow at other times of year, sow onto a tray of damp compost, put the tray in a fridge for 6-8 weeks then move to somewhere warm until seedlings appear. Transplant seedlings to an open or lightly shaded site when big enough to handle. Keep young plants watered & weeded
200-400 seeds per packet
